Alternate Rune Spells

One of the main differences between the new MRQ and the older RQ is in the casting of "Rune Magic" (RQ2 "Battle Magic") spells. Under the core, MRQ rules there are many Runes, one or two of which are required to cast a specific spell, but there are only a few spells able to be cast by any one Rune. This can be a problem in high-magic campaigns as Runecasting skills can become thinly spread. One solution to this is to introduce a set of "meta-" skills and broaden the skill applicability, an approach taken in our Petty-Magick system in Petty-Magick, Petty-Sorcerers and Hedge Wizards.

An alternative is to extend the number of Runes that can cast a particular spell - for example perhaps Demoralise (a mind-affecting spell) could also be cast by the "Moon" Rune. This is a spell biased approach, in that it keeps the same spells and extends the Runes able to cast them. It limits the need to learn different spells but reduces the focus on Runes.

Another alternative which remains Rune focussed, is to extend the range of spells but keep the same ability. Each individual spell can be cast by a specific rune (or pair of Runes), but is still very particular to that Rune. An alternative to the Earth spell "Protection", for example, could be "BarkSkin", able to be cast using the Plant Rune and otherwise being identical to Protection. This rapidly extends the capability of a Runecasting skill without spreading the spells too far beyond their original focus. Two of those "Rune-focussed" spell possibilities are listed below. Each of the "new" spells listed is identical to the original Spell, but can only be cast using the specified Alternate Rune.
